Orac score of the acai berry, goji, pomegranate and mangosteen

Jan 06

ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) is a measure of how well antioxidants absorb free radicals. To achieve optimum health, the USDA recommends an intake of 5,000 ORAC units per day. Daily food consumption for an average person attains only about 20% to 30% of this recommendation.

The USDA hasn’t conducted their own ORAC evaluation for the acai berry yet, but other institutions have slated the acai berry as having an orac score of 3,800, pomegranate at 105, goji at 253 and mangosteen at somewhere above 3000.

Chocolate Acai…mmmm!

The acai berry made it’s way into chocolate! Hershey-owned Dagoba developed a Superfruit chocolate bar with 68% acai, goji and currants. Straight from dagobachocolates.com,

“We created this bar to offer an antioxidant rich, delicious combination of fruit and chocolate from Mother Nature’s recipe book. Our blend of Acai, Currants and Goji Berries combines some of the world’s most antioxidant rich fruits, boosting cacao’s antioxidant power.”
