Reuse it or loose it – polystyrene recycling

Sep 29

Planet Smoothie - reuse it or loose itPlanet Smoothie, Founded in Atlanta in 1995,  is one of the fastest growing up and coming concepts in the country. It’s sister project, Planet Smoothie Cafe, offers a more solid format of nutrition through nutritious breakfasts and lunches. Both projects offer acai products, Acai Smoothies and Acai Bowls.

But today Planet Smoothie isn’t about food – it’s about recycling. They have announced a contest to find an inventor with an idea of how to  recycle or eliminating polystyrene from the waste process. Three respected judges have been selected to choose the winner – so let the contest begin!

Acai berry lipstick?

Sep 25

Acai berry lipstick by Tarte CosmeticsThat’s right, Tarte Cosmetics has a lip couture limited-edition t5 super fruit infused lipstick set. With acai berry extract, goji berry extract and pomegranate extract it sure packs a “superfood punch” – but I don’t think you’re supposed to ingest it! Quoted from Tarte’s website,

The first blend of its kind, the t5 super fruit complex™ is loaded with naturally occurring, antioxidant rich nutrients and vitamins that have been known to deliver refining, anti-aging and skin-restorative benefits with each application.

I suppose it’s rare for products to quote their sources. The logic of antioxidants preventing free radical damage does lend itself to tissue aging prevention, and even repair. However, there is less evidence supporting the idea that applying antioxidants externally has the same affect on the applied area. None the less, if you know an extreme acai berry fan, this could be the perfect, unexpected gift!

180 Energy – Blue with Acai

Sep 23

Blue with acai energy drinkA quote from examiner.com states “If you are looking for an acai flavor you will be disappointed, but if you were just wanting a tasty energy drink this is fantastic.”

Blue with Acai has 120 calories, 31g of carbohydrates and reportedly 90mg of caffeine in an 8.2oz can; this product sits in the middle of the energy drink spectrum.

Many products decide to build from the hype of acai, or take the easy route and quote it as Oprah’s #1 superfood, or by quoting other popular sources. 180 Energy took a slightly different route and on their website actually talk about a tribe from the Brazilian Rainforest that held the secrets of the Acai Palm. This tribe understood that the acai berry had the power to revitalize the human spirit and to rebuild life from the inside out. Kudos to 180 Energy for throwing some history out there, but to me the message just doesn’t fit with the brand image.

Extreme Acai Berry – read the fine print!

Sep 08

Extreme Acai BerryThere’s a new weight loss product making it’s rounds, at least it’s new to me. It’s called Extreme Acai Berry and claims it, “…contains the most powerful and effective ingredients for internal cleansing available anywhere on the market today! Extreme Acai Berry will help you rid your body of all that excess build-up in your digestive tract and prevent future build-up from occurring.”

Now, the acai berry has some restorative qualities with it’s high antioxidant levels. It’s even making some great headway in the cosmetic industry as an anti-aging ingredient. Is an acai pill going to make you loose weight? Regardless of whether this pill works or not, it’s important to read the site thoroughly.

Read the terms – If you read the terms located at the bottom of Extreme Acai Berry homepage, you’ll notice that by ordering the product through their website online for $3.95, you are agreeing to accept automatic billing of $89.31 after your trial period has ended, and every 31 days thereafter. The only way to prevent further charges to your credit card is to call a number listed on the terms page. If you’re like me, chances are you will forget to do so until you see that first $90.00 charge on your credit card – but by then you’ve lost 90 bucks!

I’m not interested in the debate regarding whether this product works or not. 14 days is a small window to notice results in, and if you do chances are it may not be a healthy weight loss option. The true question is, why is the actual regular price so hidden and how long do you think you’ll have to sit on long-distance hold before anyone picks up to acknowledge your order cancellation?

Tropicana Pure Raspberry Acai

Sep 07

Tropicana Pure Raspberry AcaiI have to admit, Tropicana Pure Raspberry Acai ranks very highly amongst the acai products I have tried. It ranks so highly, in fact, that I may be switching grocery stores just for the convenience of picking up a bottle or two while I do my weekly grocery shopping. Save On Foods, a grocery chain exclusive to British Columbia and Alberta starting carrying this product. I had written about Tropicana’s new acai berry juice before, so it caught my eye and I picked up a bottle. By the time I had finished the first bottle I knew this was going to become a regular purchase.

A few months passed and you could say I have become addicted. I actually find myself craving the taste. Then, last week when grocery shopping at Save on Foods (who’s tagline is, “so much more in store”), I find the juice is no where to be found. Turns out the Great Canadian Superstore still carries the juice – little do they know they’ve gained my business simply for carrying a very specific acai juice. So much for the relative quiet of Save On Foods, from now on I will be battling it out at the Superstore!
