Swanson\'s acai berry extract softgelOn March 6th Swanson Vitamins added acai berry extract supplements in softgel form to the market. Recommended to support energy and vitality, these softgel capsules contain 500mg of acai berry extract (Euterpe Oleracea). According to the Swanson website:

Recently gaining popularity in fruit smoothies and other beverages, acai berries feature a nearly perfect amino acid complex, trace minerals and more free radical fighting power than blueberries, strawberries and cranberries.

Nektre unvails new anti-aging supplement

Jan 26

Nektre Skin CareNektre LLC has developed an advanced anti-aging supplement built around recent clinical studies. The product contains 20 natural ingredients that have been found to prevent the effects of aging skin. These products are acai berry, pomegranate, green tea, Coenzyme Q10, Biovin, vitamins A, C, E, B6 and B12. It is designed to be used in conjunction with existing topical skin care programs.

Japanese consumers were the first to embrace the use of skin supplements in addition to topical skin treatments. In the last 5 years that trend has gained significant traction in wealthy European countries like Spain and the UK. These beauty supplements, known as nutricosmetics, represent 15% of the overall dietary supplement market in Japan, 11% in Europe, but only 1% in the US.

“This is an exciting time because nutricosmetics are finally gaining popularity in the mainstream US beauty market. It’s exactly the same progression that occurred with energy drinks like Red Bull.”

Are nutricosmetics the future of skin care? Nektre think’s so, and it’s not uncommon for North America to be a couple years behind countries like Japan.  If it represents 15% of the overall dietary supplement market in Japan, I believe it will take hold in North America as well.

Purple, life’s superdrink

Oct 09

At least that’s the slogan of Purple, who’s drink contains acai berry, blueberry, cranberry, black cherry, pomegranate, black currant and purple plumb. That’s quite the lineup of foods that often sprout up among conversations about antioxidants.  I can’t say I’ve tried this product myself – I haven’t seen it in stores up here in British Columbia, however they do take a very informative approach to marketing their product.

If you look at their website, they have a fairly extensive “science and research” section with an abundance of resources. One such article, titled Natural Purple Pigments In Fruits, Vegetables And Berries, Such As Blueberries, May Help Prevent Obesity, talks about the benefits linked to the purple pigment in fruits. If you’re like me, and you enjoy researching products thoroughly before using them, Purple should cater to your thirst for knowledge. Their nutrition label is posted right on their website – not many acai berry touting products do that.

Acai berry lipstick?

Sep 25

Acai berry lipstick by Tarte CosmeticsThat’s right, Tarte Cosmetics has a lip couture limited-edition t5 super fruit infused lipstick set. With acai berry extract, goji berry extract and pomegranate extract it sure packs a “superfood punch” – but I don’t think you’re supposed to ingest it! Quoted from Tarte’s website,

The first blend of its kind, the t5 super fruit complex™ is loaded with naturally occurring, antioxidant rich nutrients and vitamins that have been known to deliver refining, anti-aging and skin-restorative benefits with each application.

I suppose it’s rare for products to quote their sources. The logic of antioxidants preventing free radical damage does lend itself to tissue aging prevention, and even repair. However, there is less evidence supporting the idea that applying antioxidants externally has the same affect on the applied area. None the less, if you know an extreme acai berry fan, this could be the perfect, unexpected gift!
